Claude Duet: What Small Businesses Should Do Now

Claude Duet is a proactive AI agent that checks connected apps, works in the background and brings decisions to you. It signals a move beyond chat assistants toward agents that can prepare work without waiting for each prompt.

Hands use a brass key to open a sage-green florist-shop cabinet compartment containing blank cream slips held by a wooden clip, with locked green compartments and plants behind.

Claude Duet is a proactive AI agent that checks connected apps, works in the background and brings decisions to you. It signals a move beyond chat assistants toward agents that can prepare work without waiting for each prompt. For a small business, the opportunity is useful automation, but only with firm controls over access, approvals and usage. I recommend testing one low-risk workflow before connecting sensitive customer, employee or financial data.

What Claude Duet is and why it matters

The Anthropic Claude Duet AI agent is designed to handle ongoing work rather than respond only when you open a chat. It can check connected accounts throughout the day, prepare updates and present items that need your attention.

Claude Duet sends a morning brief based on the information and apps available to it. Anthropic says it then checks connected accounts every few hours to conserve usage limits. That is different from continuous monitoring.

Duet also carries over memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account. This could reduce setup work, but it also means your existing account access affects what the agent can see and do.

The important change is initiative. A regular assistant waits for instructions. A proactive agent can notice a calendar conflict, prepare a customer follow-up or identify an unpaid invoice before you ask. That can save manual effort, but it also raises the cost of unclear instructions or excessive permissions.

How the Claude Duet waitlist and preview work

Claude Duet is available by waitlist as a research preview. Access is limited to U.S. Claude Pro and Max subscribers during the preview, so it is not generally available to every Claude user.

Eligible users can request access through Anthropic's Claude Duet waitlist. Joining the waitlist does not mean access will be immediate. Once approved, you can review which memory, skills and connected apps carry over from your Claude account.

If you want to understand how to use Claude Duet, start with a narrow setup:

  1. Choose one routine task with limited downside.
  2. Connect only the app needed for that task.
  3. Confirm what information Duet can read.
  4. Require your approval before it sends, changes or purchases anything.
  5. Review every output during the pilot.

Claude Duet shares usage limits with ordinary Claude chats. Background checks may therefore reduce the capacity available for your normal conversations. Anthropic has not disclosed what Claude Duet will cost after the preview, so avoid building a critical process around an unknown future cost.

Claude Duet for small business tasks

Claude Duet for small business use makes sense when the task is frequent, easy to review and reversible. Drafting a message is easier to correct than sending one to a customer. Summarizing invoices is safer than approving payments.

Here is a practical task matrix for an initial test:

Control levelExample tasksAgent permission
Draft and summarizeMorning brief, calendar summary, invoice list, forecast draftRead data and prepare a draft
Human approval requiredScheduling changes, customer follow-ups, invoice reminders, web app updatesPrepare the action, then wait
Keep manual during the pilotPurchases, payroll changes, financial decisions, binding customer promisesNo action permission

Duet can help with scheduling, invoices, customer follow-ups, forecasts and work involving web apps. That does not mean every version of those tasks should be automated. The risk depends on the data involved and whether the action can be reversed.

If your workflow needs a controlled connection between Claude and business software, I can help you plan permissions, tools and approval steps through MCP server development.

Claude Duet compared with other proactive AI agents

When comparing Claude Duet with other proactive AI agents, focus on operating controls rather than feature lists. An agent is only useful if it fits your apps, your review process and your tolerance for mistakes.

I would compare any agent across five questions:

  • Does it use existing memory and connected apps?
  • How often does it check for new work?
  • Can you limit access by app, account or task?
  • Can it prepare an action without completing it?
  • How are background activity and normal chat usage counted?

Claude Duet stands out from a regular chat experience because it sends a morning brief and returns to connected accounts every few hours. Its connection to existing Claude memory and skills may make setup easier for current users. That same connection deserves careful review because old instructions or broad app access may affect new automated work.

A product comparison should not decide the process for you. Define the task, permissions and approval rules first. Then judge whether an agent can follow them reliably.

Claude Duet security risks and controls

Claude Duet security risks come mainly from access and action. If the agent can read email, calendars, invoices or customer records, it may encounter private information, unclear requests or harmful instructions inside connected content.

Use these controls before a pilot:

  • Connect a limited account instead of an unrestricted administrator account.
  • Grant only the permissions required for the selected task.
  • Keep sending, deleting, purchasing and payment actions behind human approval.
  • Exclude payroll, banking details and sensitive employee records from the first test.
  • Record what Duet reviewed, drafted and attempted to change.
  • Set your own usage budget and watch the shared Claude limit.
  • Remove access when the pilot ends or if the workflow changes.

Do not assume passwords, access tokens or connected business data are risk-free. A mistaken action can also be damaging even when no account is compromised.

Because Duet carries over memory, skills and connected apps, review those items before enabling background work. Remove outdated instructions and disconnect apps that are unrelated to the pilot.

What to do about Claude Duet this week

I recommend a seven-day pilot with one low-risk workflow. A morning calendar and task summary is a reasonable example because you can compare the output with the source without allowing Duet to contact anyone.

Use this process:

  1. Write down the exact task and the expected output.
  2. Connect only the account needed to complete it.
  3. Define which actions always need your approval.
  4. Set a usage budget for the pilot.
  5. Keep a simple log of outputs, errors and missed items.
  6. Review accuracy and usefulness after one week.
  7. Expand access only if the results justify it.

Pay attention to more than whether the output sounds polished. Check whether Duet used current information, followed your rules, identified uncertainty and stayed within the task boundary. Also check how its background work affected the usage available for ordinary Claude chats.

If you want help choosing a safe workflow or reviewing where an agent could fit, you can request an AI X-Ray scan. I will help you identify a practical starting point without pushing sensitive or high-impact work into automation too early.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01What is Claude Duet, and how is it different from regular Claude?

Claude Duet is a proactive AI agent that can check connected apps every few hours and send a morning brief. Regular Claude generally waits for you to start a conversation or provide a task. Duet carries over memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account, allowing it to prepare ongoing work in the background.

02Is Claude Duet available now, and how do I join the waitlist?

Claude Duet is available through a waitlist as a research preview. During the preview, access is limited to U.S. Claude Pro and Max subscribers. Eligible users can request access from Anthropic, but joining the waitlist does not guarantee immediate entry.

03Is Claude Duet safe for email, calendars and other small-business data?

Its safety depends on your permissions, connected accounts and approval rules. Start with read-only access where possible, connect only the app required and require human approval before messages, payments or account changes. Avoid sensitive financial, payroll and employee data during an initial pilot.
